         活生生的历史——没有什么比这更能形容牛津给我的印象。
   第一次到牛津时，我感觉自己是掉进了一个时间的琥珀，一片古老的城堡。
   15世纪盖的图书馆里至今还有学生在看书，18世纪的餐厅里厨师在懒洋洋地做着羊角面包，一堆自行车若无其事地靠在17世纪的墙上，学生透过宿舍窗户看到的那棵树，和16世纪时的一样；如果在一个下雨的黄昏你走在Church Road的石板路上，是否会疑心迎面走来的是亚当·斯密？
         和历史的相遇在这里就这么平常，不需用照相机去刻意捕捉。
   记得我们的期末考试是在一座有上千年历史的博物馆中，穿着要求极其细致：女生是白衬衫、黑裙、黑鞋，披黑袍，系黑领带，手持黑色礼帽（曾有学生因穿着不符合要求而未被准许入场）。
   试想，当一大群如此穿着的学生鱼贯步入，场面是何等壮观。那种肃穆感和宗教感一度让我认为，在牛津考试作 弊的概率会大为降低。
    在这里，秩序和行为规范通过一定的仪式感进行传扬。
    饭桌上学得的甚至多于课堂
    牛津的饭桌文化与美国高校的很不相同。
    朋友说，哈佛的学生餐厅很难听到说话声，每个学生端着比萨、可乐坐下，往往是边吃边看书或边做笔记。很少看见哪个学生光吃不读的，更没见哪个学生边吃边闲聊的。似乎哈佛的餐厅不过是一个可以吃东西的图书馆。
    牛津则大为不同，餐厅是学生们进行学术讨论、社交的重要场所。一顿饭吃上一两个小时是常事，从国际风云变幻到多变的英国天气、从Church Road上的那些老房子该不该保留到中东形势的最新进展，大家常边吃边聊，尤其是在饭后的咖啡时间。记得一次，两个女孩争论着反恐战争和穆斯林移民问题，一个多小时过去，毫无散意。
  在牛津，充满好奇心的同学们不是被动地接受知识，而是通过讨论，不断地追问，经常是从某个作者在某本书里说过什么开始，慢慢地转移到经验世界中的问题。
  由于我所在的学院以学习人文类及各国研究的学生居多，餐桌上也成了各国文化的交流场所。从德国的严谨理性到印度的社会等级、梵合同一，从中国的儒家传统和“家本位”文化到美国的制衡、独立和创新。在牛津，我们享受着文化多样性，感受着各种文明间归属的叠加性、边界的模糊性及内容的动态性。
  牛津剑桥的另一特色，是每月一次的高桌晚会（formal hall），传统悠久，程序冗长。
   “formal”主要体现在三个方面：一是穿得正式，仿佛去参加奥斯卡颁奖典礼，男的领带领结，女的低胸长裙；二是吃的正式：餐前酒、面包、开胃菜、正餐、甜品、水果、餐后酒、咖啡和茶，一样也不能少，桌上摆放着各种尺寸的刀、叉、勺等精美餐具和四五种酒杯，为了增加情调，桌布、蜡烛、鲜花一应俱全；三是程序正式：饭前先聚在大厅喝酒，等院长敲一个大锣，“咣”的一声，大家才步入餐厅，按顺序坐下，齐唱学院之歌，由院长用拉丁文嘟囔一段“感谢主赐予我们食物”之后方可进食。这样一道道程序下来，最极致的一次，一顿饭足足吃了5个多小时，活生生把我给吃饿了。
        所有的事情都可以拿来讨论
   欧洲文化的一大亮点是公共空间（Public space）。
   英国广播公司BBC的一档流行节目“提问时间”，是英国人在公共平台上积极地辩论。每期节目，主持人David Dimbleby都会邀请5个嘉宾，包括3个主要政党（工党、保守党、自由民主党）的高层官员，加上两个小党派代表或无党派人士。5个嘉宾在台上弧形排开，台下黑压压坐着几百个观众。
        节目鼓励嘉宾们就一个议题发出不同的声音，台下的现场观众也可以尽情开火。讨论的话题多样，比如：最近邮政工人罢工合理吗？工党政府提案再送500个士兵到阿富汗去合理吗？如果议员拒绝交还他们不合理的报销费用，他们应该辞职吗?所有的讨论必须有理有据，不然可能被嘘。英国人崇尚公共空间、思想独立、言论开放的风气，可见一斑。
  牛津大学更是以鼓励开展自由、公开的辩论而著名，尤其是历史悠久的牛津辩论社，是全球最有影响力和饱受争议的辩论社团。社团于１８２３年成立之时，自由交换意见和挑战权威仍是禁忌。但很快，牛津辩论社成为了学生们对人文、政治、学术辩论的聚 集点，社团主席格莱斯顿（W.E. Gladstone）日后成为了英国首相。社团吸引了众多全球有影响力的名人前来和学生们探讨、辩论，比如尼克松在水门事件后的第一次公开演讲就在牛津辩论社，并表示“是我搞砸了，我为此付出了代价”。上世纪80年代，英国和北爱新芬党领导人格里·亚当斯（Gerry Adams）——这个被西方称为“恐怖主义教父”的争议性人物，在身处媒体禁令的特别时期，仍在牛津辩论社进行了公开演讲。
  正如牛津大学校长汉密尔顿所述，自由而公开的辩论，是实现卓越的重要手段。在牛津大学，所有的事情都可以拿出来公开讨论，权威可以受到质疑，无论是老师、政府抑或制度。汉密尔顿认为，牛津大学特有的导师制非常有助于培养自由辩论的精神。
  牛津的导师制是从本科就开始的，每名本科生都会有指定的导师，每位导师一般只带两三名学生。每个星期，导师和学生之间会进行一小时左右一对一或一对二的讨论，这种讨论是完全平等的，学生既可以自由地提出问题挑战导师，也需要在辩论中捍卫自己的观点。
  牛津大学为英国培养了大批政治精英，在所有首相中，仅有3名不是牛津大学的毕业生，美国前总统克林顿等多位外国元首也曾赴牛津深造，他们的成功不能不说与在牛津培养出来的自信及思辨精神有关。
  这就是牛津大学，一个时间的琥珀，一部活生生的历史；这就是牛津大学，延续着绅士风度和贵族传统，在餐桌上可以指点江山，不同思想和文化互相碰撞、理解和交融；这就是牛津大学，崇尚雄辩教育，任何权威都可以受到质疑，“公开、自由、激烈”的辩论氛围成为了学校的灵魂。
        我在牛津求学时，学院走廊边是个玻璃窗，窗户正对着一个中世纪庭院，院子里是一片绿油油的草坪。这让我想起电影《铁娘子》中英国前首相撒切尔夫人和同学们一边捧书散步、一边讨论政治的镜头。

   撒切尔夫人今年4月逝世，母校牛津大学以她的名字命名了一项奖学金，来纪念这位英国历史上的首位女首相。这位出身贫寒的杂货商女儿，自立自强，通过奋斗，以硬朗、铁腕、毫不气馁的政治作风名流史册。站在风口浪尖，却依然活得优雅从容，坚毅淡定，她的独立、自信、雄辩、执着，或许是牛津精神的又一种诠释。

He also specifically mentioned that the University of Oxford tutorial very helpful in training specific to the spirit of free debate.

　 　Oxford's tutorial system is started from the course, and each will have a designated mentor undergraduate students, each teacher with only two or three students in general.
