2008-02-27 China to Research on 350km/H Bullet Train
China will start research in building a 350-kilometer-per-hour train for the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway that has been under discussion for years, said the country's science ministry and the railway ministry.
The Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Railway signed an agreement on Tuesday night to collaborate in developing an upgraded version of the present China Railway High-speed (CRH) trains.
The two ministries did not specify a timetable for the development of the upgraded bullet train, but said they intended the new CRH train to provide service on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway which would kick off construction "very soon", according to the railway minister Liu Zhijun, present at the signing ceremony.
2008-01-08 BJ-SH Railway to Break Ground Mid-Jan
The building of a multi-billion-dollar high-speed railway linking Beijing and Shanghai could be underway as soon as the middle of January after six companies were confirmed as winners of the construction bids.
Sources with the contractors said construction of the rail line would commence before Spring Festival, which falls on February 7, with mid-January the earliest possible time.
Civil engineering work on the 1,318-kilometer railway is expected to cost 83.7 billion yuan and is divided into six sub-contracts.
2007-12-26 Construction to Start on High-Speed Railway Next Month
The highly anticipated Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway will begin construction next month, a Ministry of Railways official said.
Based on that timeframe, the railway will be completed by 2013. Trains running on the 1,318 km railway will then be able to travel at speeds of up to 350 kph and will cut travel time between the two cities from the current 10 hours to less than five.
The project involves one of the largest amounts of investment on railways. Industry sources say it will cost more than 200 billion yuan ($27 billion), more than the 180 billion yuan needed for the Three Gorges Project.
2007-10-25 Investment Firm to be Set Up for High-Speed Railway
A giant investment vehicle will be set up before the year-end for the construction of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway, sources close to the situation told China Daily.
Financial institutions, including overseas private equity investors, will be invited to join the investment firm, they said.
It could be the first time foreign capital is involved in a railway development project in the country.
A total of 110 billion yuan ($14.66 billion) will be raised in the first stage for registered capital and another 110 billion yuan in debt financing, including bonds and loans.
If the main construction work is started before the end of this year, the railway is expected to be operational by 2010.
2007-10-10 Work on Beijing-Shanghai Rail Link Set to Start
The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway has got the green light from the central government and construction on the long-awaited project is expected to start soon.
A source with the Ministry of Railways told China Daily that work on the project will "surely begin before the end of this year", without specifying a date.
Earlier reports said the project would use high-speed wheel track technology instead of magnetic levitation.
Another report on China Economic Net (www.ce.net) quoted insiders as saying the project cost is likely to exceed more than 200 billion yuan ($26.6 billion), taking into consideration the increase in the price of raw materials and labor costs as well as other countries' expenditure on building high-speed railways.
